Menopause is defined as the cessation of menstruation for 12 consecutive months. This marks the end of a women’s reproductive years.
Menopause occurs naturally around age 51.2 when the ovaries stop producing estrogen, or surgically at any age when the ovaries are removed.
Gradually declining estrogen levels begin as early as in the 30’s – this is referred to as peri-menopause. This affects a women’s health and quality of life for the remainder of lifetime. Removal of the ovaries creates an immediate menopause - and usually more severe symptoms.
Many health problems can result, ranging from merely annoying to life threatening.
Some of the symptoms are:
| Irregular periods | Mood swings |
| Hot flashes | Vaginal dryness |
| Sleeplessness | Urinary incontinence |
| Dry skin | Depression |
| Rapid heart beat | Osteoporosis |
| Loss of libido | Hair loss |
As baby boomers age, an unprecedented number of women will pass through menopause in the next two decades, And today, women can live over one-third of their years after menopause. Menopause has become a serious public health issue as well as a concern of individual women.
